Cold Case: The Sleepover
LINK: The Sleepover (Season 2, episode 6).
THEME: Girl space / childhood power structure between girls
TRIGGERS/SPOILERS: child abuse, schizophrenia, bullying, fat shaming.
SUMMARY: In 1990, a prep-school girl was found dead in a local swimming hole. The investigation reveals that the victim of the earlier crime was routinely tormented by a trio of classmates who invited her to a sleepover the night she was killed.
WHY I LOVE IT: Girls, especially teenagers and kids, can be incredibly cruel to each other. I love it when books and movies actually examine that. It's not just the bullying of outcast girls or the way that girls within the higher levels prey on each other, it's the way that girls can group together and protect each other -- or betray each other. The victim in this episode reminds me so much of myself and of a lot of my friends.
FAVORITE LINE: "Rita, listen to me. Everyone who's ever been anything in the history of time has been a loser in junior high. In 6 years from now, you're gonna be in college and you are gonna be the coolest girl around. Because you're smart and you're different and you're wacky. And that's what's important in this world. Not what those idiot girls think of you."
